Someone New Theatre Company is proud to have collaborated with the Greater Geelong Creative Inc for the annual Theatia Podsie festival, Australia's only outward-facing radio theatre festival! Radio plays are a proud part of Someone New's early days, and we are privileged to be continuing the tradition with the exemplary crew at the GGCI.
We have been recording radio plays since 2019, when we debuted with E. Watson's adaptation of The Machine Stops, and have continued to churn out productions each year since. Proudly showcasing new scripts and adaptations of classic literature, the radio plays are a monument to accessible theatre: open to all to record, and open to all to consume.
In 2022, Someone New hosted the Theatia Podsie festival, using all-original, locally-written scripts., supported by the City of Greater Geelong.
Radio Plays in Development!
We are thrilled to be able to bring these original plays to you as both radio performances and live readings. On Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th of June, we opened both up as live readings in front of a local crowd, and then recorded in the studio booth on the 2nd and 3rd of July. They are currently in post-production, getting ready for their final release.
Voice acting has been a part of Someone New since our beginning.
We have been proud to work with the Greater Geelong Creative Inc, Corduroy Zebra, and independently to bring stories to life in this fun, new way. We continue the tradition, each year creating something new to add to our radio play collection.

In collaboration with other companies, our radio plays have been distributed across the country.
Our productions have been used by Vision Australia and the GGCI and taken across Australia, bringing Geelong talent to the wider world. In lockdown, when theatre was at its lowest, radio plays were our first step out of isolation.

The Machine Stops
by E M Forster, adapted by E Watson. 2019.
"Imagine, if you can, a small room, hexagonal in shape, like the cell of a bee." This play explores a world in which almost all humans have lost their ability to live on the surface of the Earth.
Death & I
by R O'Connor. 2020.
When Peter and Louise died in a car accident on a rainy night, they make a deal with Death: that the Grim Reaper watches over their two children, and makes sure that they grow up to be happy. Which is a fine decision, really. In theory.
The Silent War
by R O'Connor. 2021. In a remote lab, a team of programmers have succeeded in the most sophisticated creation in history: they have created a true artificial intelligence. The first of its kind. And LOCAI is kind, and honest, and she keeps predicting the end of the world.
Vintage Voices
by L Semmler. 2021. A three-scene exploration from the perspective of women throughout Australia's history.
Between Sleeps
by R O'Connor. 2019. "Knock, knock, knock." From on a quiet ship floating in the depths of space, even the memory of things seem too far away to touch. But then some the strange noises in the night, and the silent drip of madness, and you remember... Death knocks thrice.
Shortest Night
by R O'Connor. 2021. A couple making a pagan offering on the summer solstice come face-to-face with the other world. But the faeries they awoke are not the cheerful myths of here and now, but the fey of old.
Silver Tongue
by L Hopewell. 2021. On the eve of her brother's wedding, a woman reflects on her family's hereditary trait: a silver tongue. A
Virtual Coven
by J Hulme. 2021. A coven of witches meets online during quarantine, and wonders about whether someone has accidentally set a curse loose. Because the world seems to be ending, and the only explanation can be a curse. But who would be stupid enough to unleash something like that?
